Middlebury Bicentennial Photo Contest
BACKGROUND: There are many beautiful old photographs of Middlebury. While rooted in tradition, Middlebury’s spirit is also reflected in the people and places of today. Your contemporary photographs will help others appreciate the beauty of Middlebury that thousands of fellow citizens have known for centuries. Your object will be to take the best pictures of Middlebury’s people and places that show its beauty at its best, or take some past photos (none earlier than 1960) and submit them.
CATEGORIES: There are three divisions of amateur* photographers: grades K through 8; grades 9 through 12; adults. All photographs about Middlebury will be judged on their content, originality and creativity.
ELIGIBILITY: The contest is open to all amateur* photographer residents of Middlebury and all students who attend Middlebury schools, all students at Pomperaug High School, and any other Middlebury children who are home-schooled, or attend public, private or parochial schools. Photographs must be “recognizably about Middlebury” to be considered. A signed statement by a parent or guardian must accompany each submission of those under 18 years of age.
SPECIFICATIONS: Individuals or families may submit up to four photographs each. Photos may be in any format but not larger than 11” x 14”. Submitters agree to have their names publicized if their submission becomes a finalist in this contest. Photographs remain the property of the submitter or may be donated to the Middlebury Bicentennial Committee, which reserves the right to display all photographs and use them in limited ways. Submitters may pick up photographs after the end of the contest. Those not picked up within 30 days become the property of the Middlebury Bicentennial Committee. The Committee reserves the right to reject any entry for any reason.
JUDGING and AWARDS: A panel of judges consisting of committee members will do all the judging. A weighted scoring system will be used with the winning photos accruing the highest total of the judges’ scores. All judges’ decision will be final. The judges will not know the identity of the submitter. There will be one first, two second and three third-place winners in each age category. The first prize winners will receive $200 each; second-place prize winner will receive $100 each; and third-place winners will receive $50 each; all winners will receive public recognition and display of their winning photographs. In addition, there will be one Grand Prize Winner, taken from all photographs submitted, with a prize of $300. We hope to be able to display as many entries as possible, including those which do not win prizes.
